Far from the Emerald Isle – Emerald Hill

Today in Singapore I went for a wander around an area that has some pretty terraced houses. Stuck in the middle of orchard road surrounded by all the malls it’s like a little serene oasis. The area apparently gets its name from connections to people from Ireland. William Cuppage who started a nutmeg plantation on the area supposedly was from Northern Ireland though he may have been born in India. There were other Irish in the area too such a surgeon Thomas Oxley who also had nutmeg plantation. All the plantations failed due to a blight.

The current houses were built the early 1900s and since the area is conserved the external architecture is preserved.
