Getting fired up – Thow Kwang pottery jungle

Today in Singapore we got to visit a dragon kiln. Consisting of a long firing chamber built on a slope with stoke holes on the side, it pretty much relies on the hot air rises principle. We got to walk through the kiln as it is not fired so often recently.

The temperature is around 1200 to 1300 degrees and they can tell by the colour of the fire through the stoke holes or by using the curvature of these strips of clay as a thermometer. The wood ash and temperature profiles in the kiln produce interesting effects and unique pieces.
