Today in Singapore I was introduced to Breudher. Similar to lamprais it comes from the Dutch burgher community in Sri Lanka but supposedly eaten by everyone around Christmas. I had somehow missed it. It’s a bread in that it’s got yeast and is kneaded and left to rise etc. But it’s also got sugar eggs fruit spices etc making it taste like a bready Christmas cake. And to add to the confusion it is buttered and eaten with Edam cheese. While I was sceptical it tasted pretty good.
I wonder if something like this does or did exist in the Netherlands.
