Today in Dublin I took a stroll to the horse fair in Smithfield. The fair used to take place on the last Sunday of every month but in recent years following a shooting and sustained concerns regarding animal welfare the fair now only takes place twice a year.
In years gone by it was a place where deals were done, horses bought and sold and old friends and rivals had a chance to catch up. There is some photos of my attending the fair and riding horses in my communion suit. I have fond memories of the fair but even as a youngster I remember thinking that some of the horses looked a little skinny and hungry.
It seems to be all changed now and it had a faint air of an outing where people showed off their horse and carts. The atmostsphere was friendly and lots of very Dublin banter to be enjoyed.
